Tasha Hawthorne serves as Lecturer in Black Studies and Residential College Dean at Pierson College, Yale University. She holds a Ph.D. in English from Northwestern University, an M.P.S. in African American Studies from Cornell University, and a B.A. in English and African American Studies with Departmental Honors from Bates College.
Her research interrogates intersections of gender, sexuality, genre, race, and politics in Black fiction, with current focus on black pulp fiction's role in African American art and politics. Teaching expertise spans Introduction to African American Literature, African American Women Writers, Black Pulp Fiction, Special Topics: Death of the Black Child, African American Auto/biography, and 'Raceless' Writing.
Recipient of the 2019-2020 Career Enhancement Fellowship for Junior Faculty (Andrew W. Mellon Foundation), she previously taught at Berea College as Assistant Professor of English and earned Phillips Academy Andover's F.C. Robertson Instructorship for teaching excellence.
With decade-long experience across university, residential college, and secondary education settings, she mentors students while maintaining active engagement with Black popular culture. Personal background includes Midwestern roots (Kansas City, Missouri), international living experience (Germany), and family travels across 15+ U.S. states and multiple countries.
