Tarja Kinnunen is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, affiliated with the School of Applied Sciences and Department of Physical and Life Sciences. She leads the Biomedical & Life Sciences subject area and is a member of the Cellular and Molecular Models of Disease Centre.
- PhD in Developmental Neurobiology & Glycobiology (University of Helsinki)
- EMBO Long-Term Fellow (University of Birmingham)
- Wellcome Trust Advanced Training Fellow (University of Birmingham)
- MRC New Investigator (University of Liverpool)
Dr. Kinnunen's research bridges glycosylation and metabolic physiology, focusing on:
- Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling in development and disease
- Klotho protein roles in ion metabolism and aging
- Heparan sulfate proteoglycans in neural development
- Using Caenorhabditis elegans as a genetic model organism
Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals for Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life Below Water (SDG 14). Articles from 2011–2020 highlight trends in genetic model systems, metabolic regulation, and tissue regeneration, with collaborations spanning institutions like the University of Helsinki, University of Birmingham, and University of Liverpool.
- EMBO Long-Term Fellowship
- Wellcome Trust Advanced Training Fellowship
- MRC New Investigator Award
- Royal Society of Biology Member
- Google Scholar h-index of 20
Dr. Kinnunen has examined PhD students (e.g., at the University of East Anglia) and participated in grant peer-review and journal editorial work. She actively presents research on FGF/HSPG signaling and Klotho in longevity, including invited talks at international conferences.
