Taran Palmstrøm Fenn is a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Oslo. Her research focuses on the role of natural phenomena in medieval European historical writings.
Her educational background includes a Master in European Culture with a specialization in the History of Ideas from the University of Oslo and Utrecht University (2023). Her master's thesis was titled "In times of flood: Environmental Imagination in Odo of Châteauroux' (c. 1190–1273) 'Sermo in processione facta propter inundationem aquarum'".
Her doctoral project, "Chronicling the environment: Temporality and environmental imagination in medieval historical writing", explores how environmental events such as extreme weather, natural disasters, and harvests are temporalized and integrated into historical narratives of the European High Middle Ages. Her research interests span Medieval History, Environmental Humanities, Historiography, Temporality, and the History of Ideas. She is particularly interested in the environmental imagination in Latin medieval texts and how climatic imbalances are narrated in historical contexts.
She has been recognized for her academic excellence with two awards:
- Collegium Medievale's Master's Prize 2023
- Georg Morgenstierne's Prize for Outstanding Achievement in the Master's Program for European Culture, Spring Semester 2023
Additionally, Taran Palmstrøm Fenn serves as the Editorial Director of Arr, journal of ideas history (since 2023), having been an editorial member since 2022. This role reflects her active engagement in the academic community and her commitment to the dissemination of research in the history of ideas.
