Line Cecilie Engh is a Professor in the History of Ideas at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy, History of Ideas, Art History, and Classical Studies (IFIKK). Her research focuses on intellectual history and textual cultures of the Latin Middle Ages, particularly gender, liturgical practices, and Cistercian writing. She holds a PhD from the University of Oslo (2011) and has held visiting fellowships at institutions including Case Western Reserve University and the University of Toronto. Engh has directed the Master’s Program EKUL/EIK since 2022 and serves on editorial boards for Journal of Medieval History and Acta ad archaeologiam et artium historiam pertinentia. Her recent work explores themes like medieval attention training, standardization processes, and cognitive approaches to symbolism. She has published extensively on topics such as marriage symbolism, papal rhetoric, and affective spirituality in monastic contexts.
Engh’s research groups include Standardization in the Middle Ages and Translatio: Medieval Temporalities. She has organized international conferences and keynote lectures on cognitive perspectives in medieval studies. Her teaching includes courses on medieval thought, time and memory, and gender history.
