Tara E. Nummedal is the John Nickoll Provost’s Professor of History and Professor of Italian Studies at Brown University. She specializes in early modern European history, the history of science, and alchemy. Her work bridges interdisciplinary fields like gender studies, digital humanities, and print culture. She holds a PhD from Stanford University (2001), MA from UC Davis (1996), and BA from Pomona College (1992).
Research focuses on alchemists in Reformation Germany, courtly patronage, and the intersection of science and religion. Notable publications include Anna Zieglerin and the Lion’s Blood (2019) and Furnace and Fugue (2020). Awards include Guggenheim and NEH fellowships.
Teaches courses on early modern Europe and history of science. Editorial roles include Journal of Modern History and Ambix. Co-edits the Studies in Early Modern German History series.
