She specializes in stress physiology and urban sustainability, with expertise in plant responses to environmental stresses like drought and salt. Her teaching spans over 17 years, emphasizing active learning and student mentorship through independent studies, internships, and service learning projects. She has mentored over 75 undergraduate researchers.
Education:
- Ph.D., Plant Environmental Stress Physiology, Purdue University
- M.S., Water Quality and Woody Plant Horticulture, Brigham Young University
- B.S., Horticultural Science, Brigham Young University
Research Interests: Focuses on the interplay between plants and their environments, including urban horticulture, physiological adaptations to abiotic stress, and the ecological and societal benefits of urban trees. Her work bridges laboratory research and applied horticultural practices, advocating for science-based stewardship of urban ecosystems.
Extension & Outreach: Leads the Campus Arboretum, promoting tree conservation and climate adaptation through informal education. Engages in statewide efforts to disseminate research on urban forestry and horticulture, emphasizing the role of healthy tree populations in human health and environmental resilience.
Teaching & Mentoring: Develops courses like PLS 235 (Urban Horticulture) and PLS 475A (Applied Plant Physiology). Implements evidence-based teaching strategies, including collaborative learning and internship programs, to prepare students for careers in environmental science and horticulture.
