Dr. Tanya Basok is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology and Associate Dean, Research at the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Windsor. Her work focuses on migration, migrant rights, and labor justice with a particular emphasis on temporary migrant farmworkers in Canada and bordering practices affecting asylum seekers in the Americas. She has authored/co-authored multiple books including Tortillas and Tomatoes: Mexican Transmigrant Harvesters in Canada (2002) and Transnational Employment Strain in a Global Health Pandemic (2023).
Her research explores how migrant workers navigate precarious legal statuses, labor exploitation, and systemic exclusion. Notable grants include a SSHRC Insight Grant (2017–2024) on status regularization in Argentina, Costa Rica, and Mexico, and the Mariam Assefa Fund's 'Fair Farm Wages' initiative (2021–2024). She has advised numerous policy-oriented projects addressing migrant labor conditions and transnational advocacy networks.
Dr. Basok’s work bridges academic research with grassroots activism, examining topics like pandemic impacts on migrant health, geographies of border control, and the intersection of citizenship and mobility. Her publications span peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and policy reports, reflecting her commitment to socially engaged scholarship.
