Dr. Hannah Lewis is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations. She holds a PhD from the University of Hull and has held roles at Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds. Her research focuses on migration policies, forced labor, and the socio-legal precarity of migrants, particularly asylum seekers in the UK. She led the ESRC-funded 'Precarious Lives' study on forced labor among refugees/asylum seekers.
Her research interests include migration policy impacts, refugee integration, multicultural strategies, and research ethics with marginalized groups. She has published extensively in journals like Environment and Planning C, Sociology, and Progress in Human Geography, as well as books like Precarious Lives: Forced Labour, Exploitation and Asylum (2014). Her work critiques the UK's 'hostile environment' policies and their link to labor exploitation.
Dr. Lewis advises PhD students in migration studies and has contributed to policy debates on modern slavery. She collaborates with NGOs and statutory bodies, emphasizing transnational advocacy networks and vulnerable migrant populations' resilience.
