Prof Tanja Staehler is a Professor of European Philosophy at the University of Sussex's School of Media, Arts and Humanities. She holds a Staatsexamen in philosophy and mathematics from Bergische Universität Wuppertal (1997) and a PhD from Wuppertal (2001), advised by scholars including Edward Casey and Klaus Held. Her research explores phenomenological approaches to embodiment, particularly pregnancy and birth, alongside Continental philosophy (Husserl, Heidegger, Levinas), German Idealism, and ancient Greek thought. She has taught at SUNY Stony Brook, Earlham College, and University College Dublin before joining Sussex in 2003.
Her work bridges philosophy with interdisciplinary fields like art (e.g., Butoh dance), medicine, and cultural studies. Recent publications address pregnancy paradoxes, historical temporality, and phenomenological ethics. Staehler speaks German, Latin, and Ancient Greek, and her teaching includes existentialism, ancient philosophy, and feminist theory.
