Professor Tanja Brühl is the President of Technische Universität Darmstadt, where she oversees university strategy, structural development, professorial appointments, quality management, and international relations. She emphasizes interdisciplinary research and teaching internally, while externally advocating for strengthened regional alliances like the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) and fostering industry collaborations through strategic partnerships. As Germany's first autonomous university, TU Darmstadt maintains its independence while expanding a virtual European campus through the UNITE! initiative in collaboration with six technical universities.
Her leadership extends to national and international science policy, with a focus on addressing societal challenges through engineering, natural sciences, and humanities/social sciences synergies. She serves as a Senator of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (2023–2029), former Vice President for Studies and Teaching at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt (2012–2018), and active in networks like the Töpfer Stiftung's "Lehren" and acatech – Deutsche Akademie für Technikwissenschaften.
In her academic career, she was a Junior Professor and later Professor of Political Science at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, specializing in international institutions and peace processes. Despite multiple offers, she remained committed to Frankfurt until becoming President of TU Darmstadt in 2019.
