Tanja Bastia

Tanja Bastia is a Professor of Migration and Development at the Global Development Institute, University of Manchester. She holds leadership roles including Director of the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Doctoral College (2021–) and Co-convenor of the Urban Justice, Gender and Social Difference theme at the Manchester Urban Institute. Her academic journey includes a BA (Liverpool), MA (Institute of Development Studies), and PhD (Swansea).

Her research focuses on ageing and migration, social inequalities, and urban dynamics in the Global South. Key projects include a Leverhulme-funded study on transnational care among Bolivian migrants and investigations into migrant rights in Buenos Aires' informal settlements. She co-edited the Routledge Handbook of Migration and Development (2020) and has published extensively on gender, ethnicity, and intersectionality in migration contexts.

Her work bridges academia and activism, addressing issues like migrant rights, urban justice, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Current research includes studies on transnational care networks and ageing migrants' vulnerabilities in resource-poor settings.
