Nicola Piper is a Professor of International Migration and Founding Director of the Sydney Asia Pacific Migration Centre (currently on secondment). She holds a British Academy Global Professor Fellowship at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Law (2019–2022). Her expertise lies in global migration governance, particularly labor migration, migrant rights, and gender-sensitive policy frameworks. Piper holds a PhD in Sociological Studies and MA in Japanese Studies from the University of Sheffield.
Her research focuses on rights-based approaches to migration governance, with emphasis on Asia and Africa. Notable projects include examining the role of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and advocacy networks like the Migrant Forum in Asia. She leads or co-leads grants such as the UKRI GCRF Hub on South-South Migration and a Canadian SSHERC grant on gender in labor migration governance.
