Dr. Tanai Cardona Londono is a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London's Department of Life Sciences and holds a Reader position at Queen Mary University of London's School of Biological and Behavioural Science. Their research focuses on the molecular evolution and evolvability of photosynthesis in cyanobacteria, with an emphasis on synthetic biology applications for sustainable biocatalysis. Key affiliations include the CDT in Chemical Biology and the Institute of Chemical Biology.
Research interests span photosystem structure and evolution, directed evolution methods, and the structural diversity of photosynthetic proteins. Awards include the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (extended to 2027). The Molecular Evolution Lab, led by Dr. Cardona, collaborates on projects such as exploring photosystem II's evolvability and the structural biology of novel cyanobacterial species.
Recent work includes publications in PNAS, Plant Cell, and Annual Reviews of Plant Biology, alongside a textbook on photosynthetic life. Grant funding supports interdisciplinary research on evolutionary strategies for engineering photosynthetic systems.
