Dr. Tanai Cardona is Reader in Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology at Queen Mary University of London, leading the Molecular Evolution Lab. His research combines molecular evolution, bioinformatics, and synthetic biology to investigate the origins of photosynthesis and engineer light-driven enzymes.
Key research themes include:
- Evolutionary trajectories of photosystems across cyanobacteria
- Adaptation mechanisms for far-red light photosynthesis
- Structural diversification of photosynthetic complexes
- Directed evolution of sustainable biocatalysts
Recent publications (2021-2025) predominantly utilize structural biology (cryo-EM, AlphaFold) and genomic approaches to resolve fundamental questions about photosystem evolution. His work has established novel phylogenetic frameworks for understanding oxygenic photosynthesis origins.
Honors include UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and NSF CAREER Award. The lab maintains international collaborations focusing on photosynthetic mechanisms and enzyme engineering.
