Tamsin Young

Dr Tamsin Young serves as Senior Lecturer in Equestrian Psychology and Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Equine Science and Welfare Management degree at Wrexham Glyndwr University's rural Northop campus, where she integrates academic leadership with specialized research in equine welfare.

Her educational foundation includes a 2011 PhD from the University of Liverpool (based at the University of Chester) investigating physiological and behavioural stress indicators in horses, with a focus on cortisol responses, heart rate variability, and observational behaviour metrics during exercise, husbandry, and housing scenarios.

Young's research interests emphasize practical equine psychology applications, particularly through her development of a behavioural stress score scale enabling horse owners to identify stress manifestations. Her work bridges physiological measurement techniques with human-horse interaction dynamics, exploring how management practices influence equine welfare through both biological and psychological lenses.

She actively supervises undergraduate research projects and collaborates on multi-disciplinary studies examining human-horse relationships alongside Professor Lynda Birke (University of Chester) and Dr Joanna Hockenhull (University of Bristol), demonstrating commitment to cross-institutional academic partnerships.
