Tammy Birk is a Professor of English at Otterbein University and has served as Director of the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program since 2009. She teaches foundational WGSS courses alongside specialized offerings in experimental women’s writing, contemporary graphic narratives, gender and madness, and seminars on Disability Cultures and Critical Animal Studies. Her academic leadership and teaching philosophy integrate feminist praxis and critical cosmopolitanism.
- Ph.D. in English from The Ohio State University (2011)
- M.A. in Feminist Theory from The Ohio State University (1993)
- B.A. in Philosophy, History, and Political Science from Miami University (1987)
Birk's research focuses on critical cosmopolitan pedagogy, exploring how global learning can radicalize education through transnational feminist frameworks. She also works at the intersection of graphic narratives and medicine, analyzing gendered representations of mental health, and advances Critical Animal Studies through a queer/disability lens. Her work bridges literary analysis with social justice imperatives.
Birk's publications (2014–2020) demonstrate her interdisciplinary focus on globalization, trauma narratives, and pedagogical innovation. Key themes include transnational ethics, feminist dissent, and the role of creative expression in social change. She has contributed to edited volumes and journals like American Imago and Diversity and Democracy.
- Citizen Faculty Award (2016)
Birk advises the WGSS honorary society and Otterbein’s feminist/queer zine collective Kate, fostering student engagement through mentorship. She is also active in local political activism, Buddhist practice, and community-led initiatives like the 'Seekers and Healers' discussion series.
