Tammi Laninga is an Associate Professor in the Urban Planning and Sustainable Development program at Western Washington University (WWU). She previously served as Director of the Bioregional Planning and Community Design program at the University of Idaho. Her work focuses on community-university partnerships, land use planning, and collaborative management of public lands and rivers. Dr. Laninga holds a B.S. in Environmental Policy (WWU, 1994), M.A. in Geography (University of Colorado, 2000), and Ph.D. (University of Colorado, 2005).
Research Interests: Land use planning for climate resilience, community development, public engagement, and collaborative management of public lands and rivers. Her work spans bioenergy feasibility, sustainable recreation, and river conservation. She has published extensively on biofuels supply chains, community engagement, and food insecurity analysis.
Awards: 2010 Western Regional Outreach Scholarship Foundation Engagement Award (Association of Public and Land Grant Universities).
Advising & Grants: Supervised over 20 Master’s students and one Ph.D. student; program advisor for the River Leadership and Studies Certificate. Led the Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance (NARA) as PI (2011–2016), examining biofuel industry social acceptance and supply chain analysis. Advises SEJF grants and undergraduate internships.
Teaching & Service: Teaches land use regulations, community development, and environmental impact assessment. A core member of WWU’s nationally accredited Urban Planning program. Active in river management education networks and interdisciplinary collaborations with organizations like the River Management Society.
