Tamiko Azuma is an Associate Professor of Speech and Hearing Science at Arizona State University (ASU) and serves as Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. She previously held roles as Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education in the College of Health Solutions (2018–2023) and as an Interdisciplinary Graduate Faculty member in the School of Life Sciences. Her academic leadership spans administrative and research roles, emphasizing undergraduate education and cognitive science.
Dr. Azuma’s education includes a B.A. in Psychology (Honors) from UC Santa Cruz, M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from ASU, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona’s National Center for Neurogenic Communication Disorders. Her research focuses on cognition in bilingual adults and military veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), exploring attention, working memory, and language processing. She directs the Attention, Memory, and Language (AML) Lab, collaborating on projects like the Veteran Cognition and Academic Success Project with Dr. Karen Gallagher.
Her research highlights include studies on bilingual executive functions, mTBI’s impact on reading comprehension, and cognitive strategies for veterans’ academic success. She has received recognition such as the ASHA Meritorious Poster Submission (2014) and is a Fellow of The Psychonomic Society. Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods, language science, and thesis supervision.
Key collaborations and lab activities emphasize translating cognitive science findings into clinical and educational practices, particularly for vulnerable populations like veterans and individuals with neurological conditions.
