Dr. Tami Blumenfield is an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Social Work at Auburn University. She holds a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Washington (2010), an MA in Sociocultural Anthropology (2006), and an MLIS from the University of South Carolina (2021). Her research focuses on China’s ethnic minority communities, particularly the Mosuo, Nuosu, and Naxi groups in southwest China. She explores themes of gender, kinship, cultural heritage, and resilience through ethnographic methodologies.
Her work includes studies on Mosuo social transformation, family structures, and religious practices. She has contributed to publications on cultural heritage politics, tourism, and gender egalitarianism in Mosuo society. Blumenfield is also engaged in media production, including films such as Some Na Ceremonies, which highlight cultural practices often overlooked in mainstream narratives.
Her teaching includes ANTH 1000: Anthropology: Culture and Adaptation. She collaborates on projects fostering student-centered learning through film festivals and media initiatives, emphasizing cross-cultural dialogue on environmental issues.
