Dr. Tameeka Hunter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counselor Education and Supervision at Palo Alto University (PAU), where she contributes to the newly launched PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision program. She also serves on the PhD Development Committee, supporting student development, scholarship, and supervision.
Her research centers on the resilience of marginalized and multiply marginalized populations, including individuals with disabilities, chronic illnesses, people of color, sexual and gender expansive individuals, and women. She emphasizes the interconnected systems of power and privilege that perpetuate ableism, racism, sexism, and homophobia.
Dr. Hunter brings extensive experience from prior roles in higher education disability services, including as Director of Accessibility Services. She developed a cost-assistance program for neuropsychological evaluations at Georgia Tech, addressing equity gaps for underprivileged students. Her expertise in grant writing led to securing $4 million in funding at the University of Arkansas, including a $2 million HRSA federal grant.
She was awarded the National Board of Certified Counselors Fellowship during her doctoral studies and collaborates with colleagues at PAU such as Dr. Shreya Vaishnav and Dr. Donya Wallace.
Dr. Hunter earned her PhD in Counselor Education and Practice from Georgia State University in 2020. Her work is deeply informed by her identity as a Black, queer, cisgender woman with a lifelong physical disability, driving her commitment to holistic mental health support for underserved communities.
