Tamatha Barbeau, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Biology at Francis Marion University (FMU), affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Department of Biology. She coordinates the Veterinary Studies Program and the Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE). Her research focuses on reproductive physiology, endocrine disruption in amphibians, and conservation biology. She teaches courses in human anatomy, physiology, and the biology of sex.
Education: Ph.D. in Zoology (University of Florida, 2004), M.S. Zoology (2001), B.S. Biology (SUNY Oswego, 1992), and A.A.S. Veterinary Technology (SUNY Canton, 1990).
Research Interests: Effects of environmental contaminants on vertebrate endocrine systems, amphibian and reptile conservation, and reproductive physiology. Notable publications include studies on nitrate toxicity in amphibians and textbook contributions to human anatomy education.
Grants and Awards: Recipient of the FMU Excellence in Teaching Award (2008–2009), multiple grants from the FMU Foundation, and Sigma Xi research grants. Her work has been featured in journals like Journal of Herpetology and Aquatic Toxicology.
Professional Service: Serves on FMU’s Faculty Governance, journal reviewer for General and Comparative Endocrinology, and community outreach through the Pre-Vet Club and veterinary internships. Mentored numerous undergraduate researchers, many advancing to veterinary, medical, or environmental programs.
