Professor Tamas Dalmay is a distinguished academic at the University of East Anglia, holding the position of Professor of RNA Biology within the School of Biological Sciences and Plant Sciences department. His career includes roles as Head of School (since 2014), Director of Research (2008–2013), and leadership in postgraduate research programs. Dalmay’s research focuses on RNA silencing mechanisms in plants and animals, particularly the role of microRNAs in biological processes such as fruit development, stress tolerance, and cartilage formation. His laboratory collaborates internationally and integrates bioinformatics with molecular techniques.
Education: B.Sc. in Genetics (University of Budapest, 1990); Ph.D. in Agricultural Biotechnology (Godollo, 1995). Postdoctoral training at The Sainsbury Laboratory (1995–2002) and an EMBO Fellowship (1995–1997). Teaching includes Molecular Biology, Gene Silencing, and Cell Biology courses. Current research projects address microRNA functions in tomato fruit development, cartilage biology, and choroid plexus-specific miR-449. He leads over 50 research projects and has authored 133 publications, with recent work spanning plant genetics, cancer biology, and regulatory biotechnology assessments.
Editorial roles include FEBS Letters, Planta, and Methods in Next Generation Sequencing. His lab is well-funded, with active initiatives in biotechnology applications for crop improvement and collaborations in the UK, Sweden, Germany, and beyond. The laboratory also maintains an interdisciplinary approach, sharing weekly meetings with the Moulton bioinformatics group.
