Dr. Tamara Vanderwal is an Assistant Professor in the Child Study Center at Yale School of Medicine. She holds an MD from Yale University School of Medicine (2006). Her research focuses on using naturalistic conditions like movie-watching to study brain function, particularly in clinical contexts such as child psychiatric disorders. She employs novel neuroimaging techniques to analyze large-scale neural networks and their interactions during complex information processing. Additionally, she serves as an attending physician at a community outpatient clinic, supervising child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, and contributes to the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as a senior editor.
Her work emphasizes advancing neuroimaging methods to include underrepresented populations and improve understanding of developmental disorders. Collaborations with researchers like Arielle Baskin-Sommers highlight her interdisciplinary approach to addressing challenges in clinical neuroscience and neuroimaging reliability.
Key areas of research include functional connectivity analysis, sensory integration studies, and the application of fMRI to assess brain-behavior associations in diverse populations. Her recent publications (2024–2025) explore topics such as high-motion minoritized youth inclusion, cortical development in preterm infants, and predictive biomarkers for antidepressant efficacy.
Dr. Vanderwal’s contributions bridge clinical practice and academic research, aiming to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions in children and adolescents.
