Professor Tamara Tal is a leading researcher in toxicology currently holding dual appointments as Professor of Integrated Systems Toxicology at the University of Leipzig Faculty of Medicine and Group Leader of the Molecular Toxicology Group at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig, Germany. Her research program focuses on developing new approach methodologies for neurotoxicity assessment, resolving molecular mechanisms of chemical toxicity, and investigating chemical-microbiome interactions affecting host outcomes.
Dr. Tal received her PhD in Toxicology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill (2003-2008), followed by postdoctoral training at Oregon State University (2008-2011) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (2011-2015), where she later served as Principal Investigator (2015-2019). Her groundbreaking work has established zebrafish as a powerful model for high-throughput screening of environmental chemicals, particularly for developmental neurotoxicity assessment.
Her research interests center on three interconnected areas: developing new approach methods (NAMs) for developmental neurotoxicity, using molecular approaches to resolve mechanisms of chemical-induced adverse outcomes, and investigating how chemical-microbiome interactions affect host toxicity. She has made significant contributions to understanding PFAS toxicity mechanisms, particularly how these 'forever chemicals' affect neurodevelopment through GABA receptor antagonism and microbiome disruption.
Analysis of her recent publications (2021-2025) reveals a strong trend toward multi-behavioral phenotyping in zebrafish to identify subtle neurotoxic effects, investigation of chemical-microbiome interactions in toxicity pathways, and development of regulatory-ready testing methodologies. Her work bridges molecular mechanisms with organism-level outcomes, frequently employing the CITEPro high-throughput platform at UFZ for chemical screening.
- Helmholtz W2 Award (2021-2026) for NEURO-XENO-MICROBIOME project
- Paper of the Year Award, Society of Toxicology (2020)
- US EPA Science and Technological Achievement Award (2017)
- Multiple first-place awards from Society of Toxicology (2015)
Dr. Tal leads the MibiTox project investigating the intestinal microbiome's role in pesticide-induced disease pathogenesis and contributes significantly to the PARC work package 5 project developing new neurotoxicity assessment methods for regulatory use. Her laboratory leverages the CITEPro platform for high-throughput sample preparation, automated exposure systems, and effect analysis, enabling comprehensive chemical screening while maintaining biological relevance.
