Tamara Kelly is a Full Professor and Chair - Pedagogical Innovation Chair in Sci. Edu at York University's Department of Biology within the Faculty of Science. Her teaching-focused career emphasizes evidence-based practices in large course instruction, including active learning techniques and collaborative assessment methods. She leads the Integrated Science Program, a cross-disciplinary first-year initiative combining math, physics, chemistry, and biology.
Education: PhD from McGill University (2005). Postdoctoral training as a Science Teaching and Learning Fellow at the University of British Columbia (2008).
Research interests include pedagogical innovation, faculty teaching development, and the impact of collaborative learning environments. She pioneered initiatives like collaborative (two-stage) exams and peer instruction via clickers. Her work emphasizes assessing student learning through pre-class preparations, just-in-time teaching, and team-based projects in upper-year courses.
Publications focus on science education reform, interdisciplinary teaching strategies, and educator communities like the Ontario Consortium of Undergraduate Biology Educators (oCUBE). Recent work explores team-teaching dynamics and knowledge mobilization across institutions.
Recipient of major teaching awards including OCUFA Teaching Award (2013-14), President’s University-Wide Teaching Award (2014), and multiple Faculty Excellence in Teaching Awards. Served on editorial boards for Pearson Education Canada’s Biology textbooks and academic journals.
