Tamara Barakat is a Lecturer in Translation Studies at the University of Strathclyde, joining in 2023. She co-leads the Culture, Communication and Creative Practice research group and contributes to the MSc Applied Translation and Interpreting programs. Her work focuses on translation's role in cultural memory, particularly in Palestinian contexts across graphic novels, museums, oral archives, and theater.
Education:
- PhD in Translation Studies (Durham University, 2018–2022)
- MA in Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting (Awarded 2018)
Research Interests: She explores how oral history and cultural memory transform through translation across media, including verbatim theatre, children’s illustrated folktale collections, and museums. Her studies integrate intersemiotic translation and memory studies to analyze Palestinian narratives.
Publications: Her recent work includes analyses of intergenerational memory in graphic novels and the intersection of translation with cultural memory frameworks. Earlier contributions address student-staff partnerships in academic writing.
Activities: She serves on the Faculty Of Humanities And Social Sciences committee and peer reviews for the International Journal of Translation Studies.
