Tamar Alexanian is a Clinical Professor and Practitioner-in-Residence at the Elliott Milstein Civil Advocacy Clinic (CAC) within the Washington College of Law at American University. She supervises law students in civil cases involving survivors of intimate partner violence and gender identity-related legal matters, such as name and gender marker changes. Previously, she served as a staff attorney at the Youth Law Center focusing on voting rights for system-involved youth and as a Skadden Fellow at the Children’s Law Center of California advocating for LGBTQ+ foster youth.
Her academic background includes a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and a B.A. in Gender Studies and English from Vanderbilt University. She is licensed to practice law in California and the District of Columbia.
Her work integrates clinical legal education with advocacy for marginalized populations, emphasizing intersectional approaches to gender, youth rights, and systemic inequities in the legal system. Prior professional experiences in South Africa and the U.S. have shaped her focus on global and domestic human rights frameworks.
