Takaaki Morinaka is a Professor at the Faculty of Law, Waseda University, where he has been teaching since 2006. Previously, he held academic positions at Waseda University School of Law (2001-2005), Gakushuin University (1991-2000), Tama Art University (1998-1999), Tamagawa Gakuen Junior College for Women (1992-1995), and Tokyo University of Science (1991-1992).
Dr. Morinaka earned his Master of Literature from Gakushuin University Graduate School's Division of Humanities, specializing in French Literature in 1991. He completed his undergraduate studies in French Literature at Gakushuin University Faculty of Literature in 1984.
Professor Morinaka's research centers on the intersection of continental philosophy, religious thought, and literary theory. His work primarily focuses on Modern French Philosophy, Psychoanalysis, and the Philosophy of Buddhism, with particular expertise in the works of Jacques Derrida and Gilles Deleuze. He has made significant contributions to understanding Pure Land Buddhism through the lens of contemporary philosophy, especially exploring concepts of "Other Power" in Shinran's thought. His scholarship bridges Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, examining how ideas of forgiveness, gift, and community can inform contemporary social and political challenges including discrimination, the death penalty, and responses to genocide. His recent publications reveal a consistent trajectory exploring the philosophical implications of "the inhuman," the politics of forgiveness, and the intersection of religious thought with contemporary political challenges. Morinaka's work demonstrates how deconstructive thought can engage with Buddhist philosophy to address urgent contemporary issues, from the Gaza genocide to anti-discrimination efforts. His research shows particular interest in how concepts from medieval Japanese Buddhism can inform modern political thought, creating unexpected connections between thinkers like Shinran and European mystics like Meister Eckhart.
Professor Morinaka has been actively involved in public intellectual discourse, participating in numerous social activities and media appearances discussing anarchism, forgiveness, and Pure Land Buddhism. His YouTube appearances on channels like "Lessons to Leave for the Future" demonstrate his commitment to bringing philosophical insights to broader audiences. His research has been supported by multiple Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, including projects on Jacques Derrida's engagement with religious philosophy and psychoanalysis, as well as studies connecting medieval Japanese Buddhist thought with contemporary social issues.
