Tadashi Fukami is a Professor of Biology and Earth System Science at Stanford University, affiliated with the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. He leads the Fukami Lab, focusing on community ecology, historical contingency in species assembly, and traditional ecological knowledge. His research integrates experimental, observational, and theoretical approaches to understand priority effects, microbial communities in nectar, and ecosystem restoration.
Education: BSc Biology (Waseda University, 1996), MSc Wildlife Biology (University of Tokyo, 1998), PhD Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (University of Tennessee, 2003). Postdoctoral roles included Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research (New Zealand) and University of Hawaii at Mānoa before joining Stanford in 2008.
Research interests span priority effects in ecological communities, microbial interactions in nectar, and Indigenous science integration. His lab studies include projects on nectar microbes' ecological roles, plant-soil feedbacks, and conservation strategies in fragmented ecosystems. Recent work highlights how historical species arrival shapes community dynamics and biodiversity.
Key awards include the Distinguished Naturalist Award (2022), ESA Fellowship (2019), and Presidential Award (2019). He advises numerous graduate students and postdocs, emphasizing independent research and inquiry-based learning. His lab also engages with traditional ecological knowledge, advocating for 'two-eyed seeing' in conservation efforts.
