Giulio De Leo is a Professor of Oceans and Earth System Science at Stanford University, affiliated with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Woods Institute for the Environment, and Biology (courtesy appointment). His primary research focuses on theoretical ecology, particularly ecosystem resilience to climate change, disease dynamics, and sustainable resource management. He leads initiatives like the Stanford Program for Disease Ecology, Health, and the Environment, and co-chairs the Disease Ecology in a Changing World initiative.
Education: Ph.D. in Ecology (University of Parma & University of Ferrara, 1993); B.E. and M.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Politecnico di Milano, 1989).
Research Interests: De Leo investigates resilience in natural systems, focusing on infectious diseases (e.g., schistosomiasis) and marine ecosystems. His work bridges ecological theory and applied solutions, addressing challenges like sustainable fisheries (e.g., abalone in Baja California) and disease control in Africa. He emphasizes planetary health, exploring how environmental policies can simultaneously benefit human well-being and biodiversity.
Key Projects: Launched the Stanford Program for Disease Ecology, Health, and the Environment (with Susanne Sokolow) and co-founded the Human and Planetary Health Center. Current projects include using CRISPR gene drives for schistosomiasis control, assessing climate change impacts on species distributions, and leveraging community science for environmental monitoring.
