TJ Kim is a Professor at the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art & Performance, Purdue University, with expertise bridging industrial design, engineering, and business solutions. Previously a corporate design leader and consultant, he now focuses on academic-industry integration.
His educational background includes a Master of Science in Engineering, Design, and Innovation from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Design from the University of Bridgeport.
Kim's research centers on design commercialization through student-developed product platforms and collaborative communities. He emphasizes real-world business applications, guiding students to establish companies that merge design practice with industry experience.
A member of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), his work has earned multiple design awards and over 50 U.S. patents.
He actively mentors students in entrepreneurial design contexts and delivers global lectures on design thinking, coordinating workshops for non-designers and community organizations to democratize creative problem-solving.
