T. Keith Blackwell, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and Section Head of Islet Cell and Regenerative Biology in Immunology at the Joslin Diabetes Center. His laboratory operates at the Joslin Diabetes Center within Boston's Longwood Medical Area while maintaining formal affiliation with Harvard Medical School's Department of Genetics.
Research focuses on C. elegans-based investigation of gene regulatory mechanisms for developmental processes and stress defense. Key projects examine the SKN-1-mediated oxidative stress response linked to longevity and disease prevention, germ cell mRNA regulation in P-body structures, and transcriptional silencing during oogenesis. These studies aim to translate findings to mammalian systems for therapeutic strategies against diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease.
The lab actively mentors seven postdoctoral fellows and one graduate student while participating in collaborative forums including the Joslin student/postdoc series, Boston Area Worm Meeting, and Longwood Area Worm Meeting. Proximity to Harvard Medical School, Children's Hospital, and other Longwood institutions enables rich interdisciplinary interactions for aging and stress biology research.
