Research Focus
Prof. Baran’s scholarship covers a wide spectrum of topics that illuminate the passage from empire to republic: migration and refugee movements (Hungarian, Russian, Afghan), urban reconstruction of İzmir, Allied occupation policies, prison administration under foreign control, and the legal-diplomatic dimensions of the Turkish War of Independence. Her work often relies on rich archival sources—particularly Ottoman and early Republican records—to reconstruct micro-histories of security, settlement, and state-building.
Publication Profile & Trends
Across more than 50 refereed articles and six books, her recent outputs display a clear trend toward centennial reflections: Çanakkale (2015), WWI (2015–2020), the Turkish Grand National Assembly (2020), and the Lausanne Peace Treaty (2023). These studies combine diplomatic history with social history, frequently highlighting the interplay between international law, humanitarian crises, and nation-state formation.
Scientific Awards & Distinctions
Although no named awards are listed, Prof. Baran holds numerous institutional recognitions: memberships on scientific boards of major national congresses, juries of essay competitions, and editorial boards of leading history journals such as the Atatürk Research Center Journal and Near-Period Turkey Studies.
Graduate Advising & Projects
She has supervised 31 master’s theses and 4 Ph.D. dissertations on subjects ranging from the political life of Dr. Nazım Bey to the logistics of the Turkish Armed Forces in WWII. Her ongoing projects center on the centenary of the Republic (2023), producing edited volumes and international symposia that convene scholars from the Balkans, Caucasus and Central Asia.

As Director of the Atatürk Principles and Revolution History Institute, Prof. Baran leads a multidisciplinary team of historians, archivists and graduate researchers. The Institute hosts annual international symposia, maintains collaborative agreements with universities in Skopje and Moscow, and houses an expanding digital archive of Republican-era documents.
