Prof. Dr. Safiye KIRANLAR is a distinguished faculty member at Sakarya University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of History. She has served at the university since 1995, progressing through academic ranks from Research Assistant to her current position as Professor since 2018. Her distinguished career spans Ottoman and Turkish Republican history with particular expertise in social, economic, and diplomatic history.
Dr. KIRANLAR earned her Doctorate from Istanbul University's Atatürk's Principles and Revolution History Institute (1999-2005), where she completed her thesis on 'Social welfare activities in Turkey during the war years (1914-1923)'. She also holds a Master's degree from Sakarya University's Institute of Social Sciences (1994-1996) with a thesis on 'Istanbul Bab Court judgment record dated 1277/1278 AH (text transcription)', and her undergraduate degree from Uludağ University, Balıkesir Necatibey Faculty of Education in History (1989-1993).
Her research interests focus on Turkish Republican history, social history of Turkey, colonialism and nationalism, Ottoman-Turkish economic history, diplomatic history of Turkey, calendar and time concepts in Ottoman/Turkish history, women's history, and social aid policies. Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent exploration of Turkey's transformation from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, with particular attention to social welfare systems, economic structures, and cultural transformations during critical historical periods.
Dr. KIRANLAR's publications reveal a strong focus on economic history, particularly commodity trade (opium, figs), social welfare systems during wartime, diplomatic relations, and the evolution of timekeeping and calendar systems in Turkey. Her research often utilizes primary sources such as provincial budgets, court records, and historical documents to provide nuanced understandings of Turkey's social and economic development.

Dr. KIRANLAR has supervised numerous graduate students, including doctoral candidates on topics ranging from Turkish-American relations to women's history and economic history. She has led significant research projects including 'Modernleşen İstanbul'da Tahtakale'nin Sosyo-Ekonomik, Demografik ve Mekânsal Dönüşümünün Analizi, 1876-1918' (2023), 'Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyet'e Markalaşma Ve Marka Tescilinin Analizi (1871-1931)' (TÜBİTAK, 2019), and 'Osmanlı'dan Cumhuriyet'e Türkiye'de Afyon Ziraati ve Ticareti (1900-1939)' (2015). She currently teaches courses including History of Colonialism, Social and Cultural History of Turkey, Colonialism and Nationalisms After the Industrial Revolution, and Social Aid Policies from the Second Constitutional Monarchy to the Republic.
