Szymon Wiśniewski is an Associate Professor at the Institute of the Built Environment and Spatial Policy within the Faculty of Geographical Sciences at the University of Lodz. He serves as Vice-Dean for Development and Promotion of the Discipline of Socio-Economic Geography and Spatial Management, where he coordinates research activities, monitors academic staff research alignment with institutional objectives, and promotes the discipline both within and beyond the academic community.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor's degree in Spatial Economy (2009, University of Lodz)
- Bachelor's degree in Logistics (2011, University of Lodz)
- Master's degree in Spatial Economy (2011, University of Lodz)
- PhD in Geographical Sciences (2014, University of Lodz) - Dissertation: "Differentiation of Transport Accessibility of Cities in the Łódź Voivodeship"
- Postgraduate studies in Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning (2019)
- Postgraduate studies in National Security (2023)
- Habilitation in Social Sciences (2022) - "Transport Accessibility and Road Network Load in Poland in the Context of Flood Risk"
Dr. Wiśniewski's research focuses on transport geography and spatial planning, with particular emphasis on urban transport systems. His work examines transport infrastructure planning, urban logistics, transport accessibility, spatial mobility, and intelligent transport systems. He investigates how clean transport zones influence resident behavior, how transport systems respond to urban flooding, changes in commuting patterns following policy changes like Sunday trading restrictions, and post-pandemic spatial mobility limitations in Polish cities. His research combines geographic information systems (GIS) with transport planning to address contemporary urban challenges.
He has authored or co-authored over 130 publications, including four scientific monographs, and has served as principal investigator for research grants from the National Science Centre (NCN) and Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). His work contributes significantly to the understanding of transport geography in Polish urban centers, particularly in the context of environmental challenges and policy interventions.
Dr. Wiśniewski has supervised 7 theses and is actively involved in research projects that bridge academic inquiry with practical applications in urban planning and transport policy. His work with the Research Centre for European Spatial Policy and Local Development demonstrates his commitment to applying geographical knowledge to real-world spatial management challenges.
