Professor Sylvie Begin-Colin is a faculty member at the University of Strasbourg, where she teaches at the European School of Chemistry, Polymers and Materials (ECPM). She served as Director of ECPM from 2014 to 2021 and currently leads the "Engineering of hybrid nanomaterials for health, energy and environment" research team at the Institute of Chemistry and Processes for Energy, Environment and Health (ICPEES).
Her educational background includes:
- 1989: Chemical Engineer from the European School of Advanced Studies in the Chemical Industries of Strasbourg (EHICS), now known as the European Engineering School in Chemistry, Polymers and Materials (ECPM)
- 1992: PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Nancy I University
- 1999: Habilitation (HDR) on "Physico-chemical transformations induced in oxides by high energy ball-milling" from the University of Nancy
Professor Begin-Colin's research focuses on the synthesis, functionalization, and organization of hybrid nanoparticles for applications in health, energy, and environmental fields. Her work spans from fundamental studies of physicochemical transformations in materials to practical applications including cancer treatment, environmental remediation, and energy storage. She has pioneered approaches for engineering theranostic nanoparticles, developing contrast agents for early disease diagnosis, and creating advanced materials for pollutant removal. Her research demonstrates exceptional breadth across nanomedicine, environmental science, and energy materials.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on iron oxide-based nanomaterials with applications in cancer therapeutics, environmental remediation of pollutants like PAHs and PFAS, and energy-related technologies including hybrid perovskites. These works showcase interdisciplinary approaches combining materials science, chemistry, and biomedical engineering to address critical challenges in healthcare and sustainability.
Among her notable scientific achievements:
- 2001: Jean Rist Prize from the French Society of Metallurgy and Materials
- 2011-present: Scientific Excellence Award
- 2018: Knight of the Order of Academic Palms
Professor Begin-Colin has supervised an impressive 23 PhD students (with 4 currently in progress), 42 Master's students, 14 post-doctoral researchers, and 2 ATERs throughout her career. Her research has been supported by 41 funded projects, 13 industrial contracts, and she contributed to the creation of a startup in 2019 through a CNRS prematuration project. She has organized 22 conferences and participated in 18 research networks, demonstrating extensive collaborative engagement.
She leads the "Engineering of hybrid nanomaterials for health, energy and environment" team at ICPEES, where her group develops innovative nanomaterials for diverse applications ranging from cancer treatment to environmental remediation. Her laboratory bridges fundamental materials science with practical applications addressing pressing societal challenges in health and sustainability.
