Sydney Skybetter is an Associate Professor of Theatre Arts and Performance Studies and Director of the Brown Arts Institute at Brown University. He is a choreographer renowned for his work at the intersection of dance and emerging technologies, with performances at The Kennedy Center and Jacob’s Pillow. His roles include Senior Affiliate at Harvard University’s metaLAB, Founder of the Conference for Research on Choreographic Interfaces (CRCI), and Host of the podcast “Dances with Robots.”
His research focuses on choreography, human-computer interaction, and robotics in performance. Key support has come from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and a Creative Capital Award. He has lectured globally at institutions like the University of Cambridge and consulted for organizations including Boston Dynamics AI Institute and Hasbro.
As a pioneer, Sydney was the first choreographer at Brown to achieve tenure. Upcoming engagements include a performance and panel at Stanford University in May 2025. His initiatives like futureSTAGE and collaborations with roboticists further bridge art and technology.
