Dr. Sweekriti Sharma is a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's School of Public Health, affiliated with the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, a partnership with Sydney Local Health District. Her work focuses on overdiagnosis in low back pain and reducing low-value healthcare interventions. She leads the NHMRC-funded NUDG-ED trial, exploring behavioral nudging to minimize unnecessary imaging and opioids in emergency departments.
Her research spans epidemiology, healthcare policy, and global health, with a particular emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. Key projects include assessing low back pain prevalence in Nepal using WHO STEPS surveys and evaluating opioid management strategies during the pandemic. Dr. Sharma has received awards such as the 2021 Emerging Leader Investigator Award from the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance.
Her publications address diagnostic imaging overuse, emergency department protocols, and public health messaging effectiveness. She collaborates on interdisciplinary teams investigating musculoskeletal health, healthcare marketing ethics, and aging population interventions. Current research includes a rapid review of physical activity programs for older adults and a systematic analysis of imaging accuracy for low back pain origins.
