Her research centers on the social and political dynamics shaping primary health care, with particular emphasis on community health workers, health systems, vaccination programs, and disease eradication. She employs ethnographic methods to study frontline health staff in challenging environments, exploring how gender, labor, and policy influence health outcomes in countries such as Pakistan, India, Nepal, Ethiopia, and the United States.
Dr. Closser’s recent publications reveal a strong focus on community health worker programs, gendered labor, moral injury during the pandemic, and the integration of polio eradication initiatives into broader health systems. Her work combines anthropological depth with practical public health applications, contributing to both academic discourse and policy development.
- Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship, India (2018–2020)
- Norman L. and Roselea J. Goldberg Prize for best book project in medicine (2010)
She advises and mentors students in medical anthropology and global health, and her research is supported by major initiatives such as the India Primary Care Support Initiative (IPSI), the State of the World's CHWs, and the STRIPE project. She leads or contributes to projects in India, Ethiopia, Nepal, and global polio transition efforts. Dr. Closser teaches doctoral seminars in research methods in applied medical anthropology, emphasizing ethnographic rigor and ethical engagement.
