Jonas Salk, M.D., was a renowned medical researcher and faculty member. He held an assistant professorship in epidemiology at the University of Michigan and later became director of the Virus Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is best known for developing the first successful polio vaccine, which drastically reduced polio cases globally. In 1963, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, with support from the National Science Foundation and the March of Dimes. His work prioritized public health over personal profit, as he refused to patent his polio vaccine.
