Svea Bräunert

Svea Bräunert is a Visiting Professor at the Chair of Media Theory/Media Studies at the University of Potsdam (acting in summer semester 2025) and Co-PI in the Volkswagen Foundation-funded project Grenzwerte: Operative Verhältnisse von Klima und Migration at FH Potsdam. She has held visiting roles at the University of Bonn (2024), Film University Babelsberg (2023), and served as DAAD Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati (2016-2022). Her research bridges media theory, aesthetics, and sociopolitical issues.

Her research explores operative image practices across climate change, migration, and warfare, with a focus on digital forensics, drone imaging, and artistic responses to trauma and surveillance. Current book projects include Drone Imaging: War, Climate, Migration and Seeds: Containers of a World to Come, advancing interdisciplinary analysis of technology and environmentality.

Key publications analyze forensic aesthetics in contemporary art, machine vision in warfare, and media’s role in memory studies. Awards include DAAD Visiting Fellowships and Volkswagen Foundation funding. She collaborates with institutions like ZeM (Brandenburg Center for Media Studies), DFG Graduate College Sichtbarkeit und Sichtbarmachung, and the Niehoff Center for Film and Media Studies.
