Svante Pääbo is a Swedish geneticist and Nobel Laureate (2022) renowned for pioneering evolutionary genetics and ancient DNA analysis. As founding director of the Department of Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (Leipzig, Germany) and honorary professor at Leipzig University, he has led groundbreaking research on Neanderthal and Denisovan genomes, reshaping understanding of human evolution. His work includes the first draft of the Neanderthal genome (2010) and discoveries about Neanderthal genetic contributions to modern human diseases like severe COVID-19 (2020).
His research spans genetic sequencing, language evolution (e.g., FOXP2 gene), and neurogenetic differences between archaic and modern humans. Recent studies (2022) highlight his focus on TKTL1 gene variants influencing brain development.
