Suzanne Adema is an Assistant Professor of Latin at Leiden University, affiliated with the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) and the Department of Classics and Classical Civilization Studies. Her research focuses on linguistic and narratological analysis of Latin war narratives, particularly the role of speech and thought representation in texts like Caesar’s *Bellum Gallicum* and Vergil’s *Aeneid*. She investigates how ancient authors use rhetorical devices to shape reader perception of warfare and historiography.
Her work combines quantitative linguistic methods with close textual analysis, contributing to both classical scholarship and pedagogical approaches to Latin instruction. Key publications include her monograph *Speech and Thought in Latin War Narratives* (2017) and a chapter analyzing pre-battle exhortations in Caesar’s Gallic Wars (2016). Adema’s research has been supported by grants such as the NWO-project Ancient War Narrative led by Caroline Kroon and Irene de Jong.
In pedagogy, she emphasizes evidence-based teaching methods and has written on Latin language learning strategies. She holds a Ph.D. in Classics and actively contributes to interdisciplinary discussions on ancient literature and cognitive studies.
