Caroline Kroon is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Art and Culture, History, Antiquity at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and concurrently serves as a full professor of Latin and Director of the College of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. She holds a doctorate from the University of Amsterdam (1995) and has held academic leadership roles including Dean of Humanities at VU Amsterdam and Chair of the National Research School for Classical Studies (OIKOS).
Her research focuses on Classical Latin literature with an interdisciplinary approach blending linguistics and literary studies. Key areas include discourse linguistic phenomena in Latin texts, such as particles, tense, and anaphoric reference. Recent work includes co-editing Textual Strategies in Ancient War Narrative (2018) and coordinating the Anchoring Innovation program’s Discourse and Rhetoric projects. She has been recognized with awards including the Keetje Hodshon Prize (1997) and Van der Leeuw Professorship (1999).
Academically active in editorial roles, she serves as series editor for Amsterdam Studies in Classical Philology and on the boards of Mnemosyne and the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae. She has supervised 7 PhD theses and teaches courses in Latin epigraphy and language. Current administrative roles include leadership in humanities education and research coordination spanning linguistics and rhetoric studies.
