Suzannah Biernoff is a Reader in Visual Culture at Birkbeck, University of London, with a distinguished academic career spanning medieval and modern visual culture, disability studies, and medical humanities. Her research focuses on the history of the body, face, and sensory experiences, particularly through the lens of war-related disfigurement and cinematic representations.
- PhD in Art History from University of Technology Sydney (1999)
- BA (Hons) from University of Sydney (1994)
Her scholarly contributions include two seminal monographs: Sight and Embodiment in the Middle Ages (2002) and Portraits of Violence: War and the Aesthetics of Disfigurement (2017). Current research on Cinema and the Unbeautiful examines film's role in shaping facial difference stereotypes.
