Sarah Howard is a Research Fellow at Birkbeck's School of Historical Studies, affiliated with the Wellcome-funded Connecting Three Worlds (C3W) project. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of London (2020), and has held fellowships at the University of Birmingham (ESRC) and Addis Ababa University's Institute of Ethiopian Studies. Her work bridges historical and anthropological studies of Ethiopia, focusing on state formation, socialist health systems, and childcare.
Research interests include the political origins of public health in Ethiopia, gendered labor in state structures, and post-socialist legacies in global health. She explores cooperative kindergartens of the Derg era and the materiality of state practices through ethnographic and archival methods.
Teaching focuses on medical humanities and historical approaches, including modules like 'Approaching the Past' and 'Critical Entanglements in Medical Humanities'. She contributes to Birkbeck's Centre for Medical and Health Humanities and serves on its Steering Group.
