Susie Mallard Barnes serves as Associate Professor of Social Work and Director of the Social Work Program at Barton College, overseeing Traditional and Professional Studies BSW options with over 20 years of expertise in social work education, program development, and evaluation.
Her academic foundation includes:

- M.S.W. from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin
Dr. Barnes' research critically examines systemic inequities through housing and food insecurity, restorative justice frameworks, poverty as trauma, and intersectional analyses of race, gender bias, and LGBTQ rights. Her work emphasizes community-centered solutions for marginalized populations.
Prior to academia, she directed a large Raleigh-based shelter and transitional housing program for homeless services, integrating frontline experience into her educational leadership and advocacy for social justice.
