Joan Pendergast is a Professor of Social Work and Title IX Coordinator at Concord University. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of South Carolina (2007) and dual degrees (M.S.W. and B.S.W.) from Marywood University (1994, 1993). Her work focuses on social environments, academic achievement, and LGBTQ+ advocacy. She has extensive experience in community mental health, school-based counseling, and emergency room social work.

Research & Service: Her research explores the impact of middle school social environments on academic performance. She founded Concord University’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) and oversees the campus-wide SafeZone initiative. She actively participates in state-level conferences on LGBTQ+ cultural competence and has engaged in international exchange programs in Russia. She advises the Student Conduct Board and serves on the Concord University Student Activity Committee (CUSAC).
