Susheng Tan

Dr. Susheng Tan is a Research Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, serving as Executive Microscopy Specialist at the Nanoscale Fabrication and Characterization Facility (NFCF) within the Petersen Institute of Nanoscience and Engineering (PINSE). He holds a B.S. from Jiangxi Normal University (1987), M.S. and Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1994/1999), and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota (1999–2002). His expertise includes advanced microscopy techniques (TEM, SEM, AFM) and nanomaterial characterization for energy-efficient materials.

Research focuses on nanostructured materials, particularly using transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic methods to study soft and solid-state materials. Key applications include sustainable materials for energy storage (batteries, supercapacitors) and quantum materials. He has pioneered studies on astromaterials and space-radiation effects on materials.

• Developed novel methods for synthesizing and analyzing nanocomposites, including MXene-based supercapacitors and lithium-ion battery anodes.
• Expertise in semiconductor nanowires (InAs, ZnTe) and superconducting junctions.
