Susanne M. Arnold, MD is Professor of Medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and serves as Associate Director of Clinical Translation at the Markey Cancer Center, where she also holds the Buck-Kentucky Lung Cancer Research Chair position. As an eighth-generation Kentuckian and second-generation physician (her father directed the Center on Aging at UK for over 25 years), Dr. Arnold is deeply committed to addressing Kentucky's significant cancer health disparities through clinical practice and research.
Dr. Arnold earned her medical degree from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Virginia Health System, and pursued her fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at the University of Kentucky. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Specializing in Medical Oncology with focus areas in Lung and Thoracic Cancer and Head and Neck Cancer, Dr. Arnold treats patients with head and neck cancer, lung cancer, oral cancer, throat cancer, neck masses, and relapsed/refractory cancers through clinical trials. Her clinical work includes performing bone marrow biopsies, chemotherapy, early cancer therapeutics, and Phase 1 drug clinical trials. She is particularly dedicated to addressing the high cancer mortality rates in rural Kentucky, especially in Appalachian regions.
Dr. Arnold has made significant contributions to cancer research methodology through her creation of the Clinical Trials Boot Camp in 2013, which has trained junior faculty to develop over 31 interventional therapeutic clinical trials and enroll more than 200 patients. She later developed the Advanced Clinical Trials Boot Camp in 2018 to accelerate clinical translational research.

As Associate Director of Clinical Translation, Dr. Arnold leads initiatives to bridge laboratory discoveries with patient care. She has been instrumental in establishing the Precision Medicine Clinic and has been featured in national media including PBS NewsHour discussing challenges of fighting cancer in rural Kentucky. Her work focuses on developing novel clinical trials to provide Kentuckians with cutting-edge treatment options while addressing the state's significant cancer disparities.
